2014 travels

I’m on a mission to Take 12 Trips in 2014 – with at least one trip every month, whether that’s a day out, weekend away or international trip. The start of the year included UK city breaks to Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and London, as well as sunshine, tagines and mint tea on a Moroccan mini-honeymoon in March. Next I ticked a trip off the wish-list by visiting Bergen and the beautiful Norwegian fjords before learning to cook Sicilian style on a quick jaunt to Catania. Summer was all about the journeys, with my first cruise around the Eastern Mediterranean in June and a European rail trip to celebrate my birthday in July.

Next up: After a month of local travel I’m back on the road in September for a week in Northumberland followed my first trip to Canada, exploring Quebec. Then in the pipeline for the rest of the year are a return trip to one of my favourite parts of Italy, a weekend in a new European city – and who knows what else!

My top-five travel wishlist

  • Mayan temples and stunning beaches along the coast of Southern Mexico and Belize.
  • Road and rail trip across Canada, visiting the Rockies, Vancouver and National Parks.
  • Wildlife spotting on safari in Africa
  • Wine tasting my way around Chile and Argentina
  • Exploring the wild Scottish Highlands.

  1. Hey Lucy,

I found your blog through Thelma and Louise! It really is inspiring, well done!

I’m a newbie traveller having only done family package holidays in the past but already have trips in the pipeline… just cannot wait to get going!

Your top 5 is very similar to my ever changing list! I’ve got (in no particular order) African Safari, Italy, Jordan/Petra, NYC and Egypt or Northerm Lights at the top at the mo!?! :-S

    Happy travels 🙂

    • Hi Rach

Thanks for reading! Travel really is so addictive, once you get started the list of places you want to go to just gets longer and longer. It definitely looks like we have a lot of the same places on the wish list. Northern lights is another I’d love to do (knew restricting it to a top five would be way too hard!). Hopefully I’ll get to cross at least one off next year so will keep you posted on the site, and hopefully we can meet up at one of the Thelma and Louise events sometime.

  2. What a great blog! I blog about my travels too, but yours is one of the best layouts I’ve come across. I’m in the process of re-vamping mine, and you gave me a lot of inspiration 🙂

    • Thanks Kayla! The design side is my day job so I spent ages fiddling around with images and logos before I was happy with it, and still keep tweaking! Good luck with your site revamp – I’ll be sure to check it out. Lucy

  3. I found your site through the WordPress recommended travel blogs – what a gorgeous blog! Can’t wait to dive into your archives 🙂

I’m a bit of a newbie traveller, just getting started, but I’m currently living in Italy for 8 months and would definitely recommend that you visit – for the food if nothing else! Pompeii is really interesting and the boat trip to Capri is absolutely beautiful.

I’m also planning a trip to Central America and am desperate to visit Asia at some point in the future, so will stay tuned to pick up more tips!

    • Hi Sarah, thanks for stopping by! Living in Italy for 8 months sounds great. Weirdly enough I’m going to be in Italy in April and staying in Sorrento, and have plans to visit Pompeii and Capri so any tips would be gratefully received! I’ve not been to Italy for years so am totally looking forward to seeing more of it – and definitely doing lots of eating and drinking out there!

  4. Amazing blog! just found it like the others on the recommended blogs section! ^^ I think i’ll stick around for a while…You seem to have quite an experience in travelling! Do you speak any foreign languages?
    Marie

    May 16, 2012
    • Hi Marie, thanks for visiting my site and glad you like it! I don’t speak as many foreign languages as I’d like but do speak some French – enough to get by anyway! Lucy

      May 17, 2012
  5. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed.

I can definitely recommend the beaches and temples of southern Mexico and Belize, as I’m currently living in Belize, and they’re both here in abundance!

    Cheers,

    John.

    • Thanks John, it’s been a busy day! You live in such a beautiful part of the world, I’ve been longing to visit for years and should be finally getting out to see it next year – can’t wait.

  6. ooohhh Jordan! Fantastic place! I’ve never been but heard nothing but good things about it. Enjoy your travels Luce.

    October 24, 2012
    • Thanks, I’ve been wanting to visit Jordan for years and am so excited about finally making it out there. There’ll be lots of posts and photos about it to come!

Hey, we’re in Jordan right now too! Enjoying it? 🙂

    November 11, 2012
    • I head out there at the end of this week! Hope you are having a great trip so far. Let me know if you come across anything not to miss!

We are! but are you traveling by yourself? The men are VERY aggressive. Lots of staring, even though I’ve been quite covered and with my husband.

We covered Amman, the Dead Sea, Madaba, Petra and Wadi Rum. Of course, Petra you have to see, but Wadi Rum is really beautiful and peaceful. Camping with the Bedouins was a great experience!!! but bring warm clothes! The desert gets cold at night.

      November 14, 2012
    • I’m travelling with my boyfriend so hopefully shouldn’t be too bad. Thanks for the weather tips, will make sure to pack something warm. Can’t wait to get out there now!

      November 14, 2012
  8. If only I knew, you definitely should have visited Leeds whilst you were in the UK, it’d the fastest growing city outside of London, and the place I call home 🙂

    April 1, 2013
    • I’m ashamed by how little of some parts of the UK I have seen yet! Liverpool and Leeds are next on my UK travels list for sure.

      April 1, 2013
    • Great stuff, be sure to let me know when you’re heading to God’s Own County and I’ll show you around 🙂

  9. Hi Lucy,

I love reading about all of your travels! It’s always fun to “meet” a women with the same heart for travel! I’ve been to Belize and Africa and wanted to share my experiences with you!

    Belize – http://wifewithbaggage.com/central-america/belize/
    Namibia – http://wifewithbaggage.com/africa/namibia/

Can’t wait to read about your 2013 trips!!

    April 10, 2013
    • Hi Diane, thanks I’ll definitely check out your articles. I’m just starting out on the planning stage of my Belize trip and can already see I’m going to have trouble narrowing down everything I want to see into a few weeks out there!

      April 12, 2013
  10. I’ve wanted to see the Norwegian fjords as well. Especially because my family is from Norway. We are going next month and I’m so excited! 🙂

    April 18, 2013
    • Hope you have a great trip, I’m so looking forward to seeing the fjords later this year, I’ve been longing to get out there for ages!

      April 20, 2013
  11. I’ve been lucky enough to do 2,3 and 5 on your list. Far and away the best experience is an African safari. Do it while you are young and adventurous! Argentina and Canada are easy and can be done anytime.

Good luck with your adventures. I hope you get to do them all.

    April 30, 2013
    • I am so keen to do a safari but it can be a pricey trip so hasn’t happened yet (I’m not so good at going a long time without a trip which doesn’t help with the saving up) but definitely within the next few years. I’ve got the Norwegian fjord trip coming up this summer so will have a space on the list to add a new trip, so hard to narrow it down!

      April 30, 2013
  12. Lovely blog and your budget-london post was great! I did a Safari in Spring (Namibia, SA) and it was amazing. For summer we’re going to be in and around Bergen. 🙂 I can’t wait!

    May 2, 2013
    • Thanks for visiting and have a great trip to Bergen, I can’t wait to get out there – will check out your posts for some tips, have been very slack on the travel planning for Norway so far!

      May 13, 2013
  13. If/When you come visit Norway, I would also recommend to visit The Pulpit Rock. It’s a uniwue experience and a good workout if don’t mind hiking a bit.
Hope you get to visit your dream destinations for 2013 🙂

    May 11, 2013
    • Thanks, I’ve seen some photos of the Pulpit Rock and it looks spectacular (if a little bit scary!). Fingers crossed I can make it out there sometime soon, I really want to experience some of the amazing landscapes in Scandinavia soon.

Hey Lucy – great site! If you’re coming to Canada, make sure you come to paradise on Vancouver Island. Also, I’ve spent time in Kenya and Tanzania – highly recommend!

    Cheers…Ben

    September 15, 2013
    • Thanks Ben, I was hoping to make it out to Canada and travel from Vancouver through to the Rockies this year but it didn’t quite work out – will have to see if I can make it out next year!

      September 17, 2013
  15. Hi do the Norwegian trip and do it in winter to see the Northern Lights, A great spectacle

    September 16, 2013
    • I would love to see the Northern Lights, I’ve seen such amazing photos but I’m sure even they don’t convey how spectacular they are in person.

      September 17, 2013
  16. great blog by the way

  17. Hey Lucy! Love love love your blog! I’m trying my best to plan a few trips myself…starting locally with a trip to Montreal for the Christmas:) Check out my bucket list destinations here: http://donzwebb.wordpress.com/bucket-list/

    • Thanks for visiting – Montreal at Christmas sounds great, I really must make it out to Canada soon, it’s been on my wish list for years. Love your bucket list too, lots of fantastic travel ideas on there!

      October 14, 2013
  18. Really interesting blog, but destinations in Africa are definitely missing. If you need help for the planning of your safari or if you want to climb Kilimanjaro or relax at the beaches of Zanzibar, feel free to contact me 🙂

    November 6, 2013
    • Definitely keen to explore Africa soon so I will get in touch!

  19. Hi Lucy,

Just stumbled across your blog and it is amazing! Your top 5 list is very similar to mine although I feel like my list is never ending…

    x

    December 6, 2013
    • Thank you. It was tough to narrow the wish list down to five – I’m thinking of expanding it to a top ten as I keep changing my mind what to put on it! Good luck with your blog too, will follow along and see how you get on x

      December 6, 2013
  20. When I found your site, I was hoping that you had visited Norway as we just booked a trip there (couldn’t pass up an airfare sale of $250 one way from California to Oslo). Happy travels!

    December 13, 2013
    • Funnily enough I am booked to go to Norway next spring, but no tips til then I’m afraid. Sounds like you got a great deal – hope you have a fantastic time!

      December 16, 2013
  21. Hey Lucy! I love the blog, what a great find. As other comments have stated, Canada is a must. I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and the Rockies are an unbelievable sight to see! Hope to read about you out there in the next couple years (try to go early to mid July- Stampede Week in Calgary!)

    December 17, 2013
    • Thank you. I have wanted to go to Canada for years so must do it soon, only problem is I have such a long Canada wishlist that I’d need to be there for 6 months! The Rockies are top of the list though so I will definitely make it out there for starters.

      December 18, 2013

Hi (again)! I am so impressed that your “wish for” trips are across continents! Have an amazing time in Morocco with your husband! We just returned from our honeymoon (part 2) in Costa Rica – both Manuel Antonio hiking & relaxing and Pacuare hiking & whitewater rafting. What a beautiful country & culture!

    January 31, 2014
    • Costa Rica is a fantastic country, I spent a couple of weeks out there a few years ago and loved it – hope to get back out to Central America sometime soon, though I’ve got enough planned for this year to keep me busy already!

      May 1, 2014
