About this site

On the Luce aims to inspire independent travellers who might not be in the position to travel long-term but want to make the most of their travel time. I’ve been travelling for over 20 years so have plenty of tips, stories and photos to share – from the UK, Europe and around the world. I’d describe my travel style as ‘budget luxe’, meaning I like to make the most of my money but throw in a few luxury touches where I can.
Regular features on the site include Travel tales (places I’ve been and things I’ve seen), In pictures (photos that tell a story), Guides (tips and advice from the road), Weekending (travel inspiration if you only have a few days to spare) and Reviewed (my favourite accommodation and gear for high quality on a budget).
All trips featured on On the Luce are based on my own travel experiences. The vast majority are planned, booked and paid for by me. Where I accept the occasional discount or sponsorship these will be clearly marked and I promise that I’ll still give you my honest opinion.
My favourite travel blogs
I’m an obsessive travel blog reader (especially when I’m supposed to be doing something useful) but have a few favourites that I keep coming back to:
- Fellow part-time travellers combining a love of travel with everyday life: Backpacks and Bunkbeds, See My Travels, Grown Up Gap Year, The Travel Hack, Girl Tweets World and Two for the Road.
- Female travellers exploring the world: Beyond Blighty, Reclaiming My Future, Never Ending Footsteps, Legal Nomads and Alex in Wanderland.
- Giving me hope that it is possible to combine marriage, kids and other grown up exploits with travel and adventure: yTravel Blog and Mummy Travels.
- And finally some lovely (and talented) bloggers I’ve got to know since starting this site: Travel with Kat, Restless Jo, The Travelbunny, A Bit of Culture and Need Another Holiday.
Gorgeous blog! Look forward to reading more!

Very nice travel blog. Good luck with your 2012 wish-list trips! Pretty interesting stuff there.
Thanks for stopping by. Hopefully it should be a good travelling year, though the more I see the more I want to see, so the wish list gets ever longer!
Good to read about your travels – hope 2012 is a great one!
I go back to Madagascar this year, and really looking forward to it.
If you get the chance, have a look at my site, and let me know what you think:

Hi, thanks for stopping by. Madagascar sounds amazing, hope you have a great time. And good luck with the blogging – I loved the packing lists and tips on your site, how ever much I go away I’m still an overpacker!
Hi,
Good to hear from you. I go to Madagascar in October, so a while to wait. If you ever think of going, I can recommend going through friends who live in the south of the country.
Thanks for your encouragement and the feedback on my site! The truth is that I’m still a little bit of an overpacker, but every time I go away I try to improve!
Just seen you mentioned me here! I’m really chuffed. Thank you 😀
You are very welcome! It’s been lovely to ‘meet’ you through blogging, and hopefully sometime us blogging ladies can all manage to be in the same place to actually meet up in person!
Beautiful blog. To be followed by me.
Thanks for visiting, and I’ll be sure to check out your site too.
Hi Lucy, great blog and good photographs…you can add Isle of wight …i thought it is heaven on earth. one the places that gives me peace………..
Very true – I’ve been to the Isle of Wight a couple of times, for family holidays and to visit a friend there, though not for a while. It’s a very peaceful place, almost like going back in time to what the rest of the UK was like 30 years ago.
Hi Lucy, I love your blog and photographs. I recently started one as well, mainly for a class but I would love to continue it after. You inspired me a lot. Please tell me what you think of mine too. I would love some advice on it especially I am new.
Hi, thanks for visiting. And good luck with your new blog! It’s looking great already. My big tips would be keep posting regularly when you start (even if it feels like no one is reading for a while, it takes a while for it to pick up!) but don’t go too overboard and run out of things to write about. That and take loads of photos on every trip you do as you never know when they can be useful for other posts. Blogging does take up a lot of time but it’s so worth it!
Hi Lucy,
You’ve got a beautiful blog going. Wonderful photos and writing.
Look forward reading more.
Christiane
Hi Christiane, thanks for visiting and glad you enjoyed the site, should be lots more travel stories and photos coming up this year!
Lucy
Massive fan of your philosophy. Think I’m in a similar situation of trying to aim for some new exciting destinations once or twice a year. Failing that I will probably ditch my job and travel and work.
Blessings Lucy,
This is a great blog, truly interesting. Keep up the good work, makes me want to go somewhere. Many blessings to you.
Thanks so much for visiting.
Blessings,
You are truly welcome, truly enjoyed it. Many blessings to you and yours.
Hello,
I am thoroughly enjoying reading through your blog, and your travel stories are truly inspirational to someone like me. I’m new to the world of blogging, but really hope to see my little space develop from a Food Blog to a Food + Travel blog.
I will ‘Follow’ for sure; and do look forward to more of your adventures.
All the very best! 🙂
Thank you, and good luck developing the travel side of your blog – food and travel goes so well together, I will make sure to check out some of your posts!

Fantastic blog, look forward to working through the New Zealand posts.
Thanks – and if you have any NZ questions just give me a shout. Look forward to reading about your trip out there, sure it’ll bring back lots of great memories!
Really nice blog. I was wondering if you had the chance to visit Treviso during your travelling?
Thanks, no I haven’t visited Treviso yet but hope to see some more of Italy next year – I love the country!
We will welcome you for sure 😉
Loved reading through your posts, especially the Paris one. Great to read about the wanderings and musings of other lady travelers-come-writers out there, and so much useful information!
Thank you! I love Paris – my next trip out there is planned just before Christmas so I look forward to sharing some photos of it looking all festive.

Also, I was wondering if you can do a guest post on my blog about one of your travel experiences to a city in the United States?
Thank you!

Thanks so much for visiting!
Love your blog! I too have a deep passion for travel and am trying to find a balance between travel/adventure and work!
Thanks Jessica, always great to find more part-time travellers! Look forward to reading more about your adventures.
Great blog! Being a editor/designer you most certainly know how to put together a good site. I’m wondering if you had any tips on maintaining a successful blog. I started mine about a year ago and have been experimenting and reading other people’s like minded blogs to find advice. If you had time, I’d appreciate checking mine out and letting me know!
Cheers,
Emily
Hi Emily, thanks so much. Would be happy to take a look at your site – will drop you an email with some thoughts. Happy travels!
Hi Lucy. Great blog! WordPress led me to this site. The passion and effort you’ve put into its making shines through. It’s a great place to travel vicariously.
If you have the time, I’d greatly appreciate it if you could let me know what you think of my recently posted, breezy longish travelogue. http://musingsandwitterings.wordpress.com/ It’s called: “Japan, Seen Through Indian Eyes.” I’m new to blogging generally, although I do enjoy writing and any tips would be welcome. Many thanks.

Hi Really good blog, I always enjoy reading it. I am just setting up a wordpress.com travel blog and am stuck for a theme. Is your theme from WP.com or is it from another source ?
Hi Tim, thanks very much – my theme is from WP.com and is called Linen, it’s a premium theme (paid for) and I’ve adapted it with a custom header and my own social media buttons. Best of luck with your new site!
Thanks. I hope to have my site set up for our next trip, Hong Kong, South Korea and North Korea in August. In October we are off to Australia, Malaysia and Thailand. Site is called Tim and Alida on Tour – but this may change.
