About me

I’m Lucy (hence the dodgy loose/Luce pun), by day I’m a freelance editor and designer, but my real passion is travel. After 10 years in London, I gave up the day job in 2011 to develop a more flexible lifestyle. I did the whole “give up everything and travel for years” backpacking trip in my 20s, but now with a business, house, family and friends, I’m trying to bring them all together. So I’ll be mixing travel and everyday life – taking trips as and when I can, from weekends around the UK and Europe to more far-flung exotic trips.
I’m travelling on a budget, but have done my share of dorms, two-day bus journeys and instant noodles. This is grown up backpacking with a touch of luxury – proper beds, occasional internal flights, and a good glass of wine. Hope you can join me as I share my travel tales, tips and photos – and if I can help you plan your travels, drop me an email at lucydodsworth@yahoo.com or find me on Twitter, Facebook and Google+.

Great blog!
I’m a big fan, so much so that I’ve nominated you for The Versatile Blogger Award!
Thanks so much for the nomination!
Nice to meet you! I follow the link from Katerina’s blog and her post on the travel-work balance. Funny, we are in the same industry (well, pretty much, I’m a translator/editor/copywriter) and I’m also struggling between life at home and life on the road. I did a lot of backpacking in my 20s (technically, I’m still in my 20s!) and now if I can skip the dorms & cockroaches I’m fine with that. That said I’m still a shoestring traveler.
Anyway, nice to meet you 🙂
Hi Zhu, great to meet you too, thanks for stopping by! Sounds like we are in the same situation, trying to combine travel and everyday life. I think I’ll always be a budget traveller – I’d always rather do lots of different trips than one expensive luxury one – but glad to leave behind the bunk beds and bugs! I see from your site you’re based in Canada, it’s on my list for next year so I’ll be having a look through for some tips!
Thanks, Lucy
i really like your posts.. they help me in my projects a lot n the description is so nice that i some times do read it for my friends as story….keep blogging
ı lıke your sıte very much. pls help my projects as well.auybowanceylon.wordpress.com
Thanks for stopping by. And good luck with your site, I’ve always wanted to visit Sri Lanka – I’ll make sure to get in touch when I do!
Good luck with your travels – my wife and I chucked our jobs in some 18 months back and took a cargo ship from London to Buenos Aires and had a blast! Having travelled through South America we ended up in Asia before finishing up in Greece. We’re now back in London and look back fondly at out time away and the memories made.
Thanks. I’m very jealous of your trip around South America, I’ve hardly touched that continent yet and there are so many amazing places to see – so many countries to visit still!
Hi Luce,
I have so been enjoying your blog. I’ve nominated you for a Sunshine Award – you deserve it!
Here’s the details:
http://scottybecca.wordpress.com/2012/02/12/bloggers-are-so-nice/
Hi there, and thanks so much for the nomination! Such a nice idea x
Some great content here, you are a true artist 🙂
Thanks so much! Have been taking a look at your site and you’ve got some stunning photos too – love the landscape and architectural shots, always my favourite subjects.
Great blog, Luce 😉 I have shed the sharing dorms time of my travels and i’ve moved onto travelling with a budget… but sleeping in comfy beds and enjoying glasses of wine and cocktails.
Love
Thanks for stopping by. Yes my dorm days are definitely over, and agree with you about the cocktails too, they’re a travel necessity!
I also cannot imagine going back to the dorm days. I have found Tripadvisor quite useful in suggesting cozy B&Bs or hostels that allow me to travel on a budget without any reduced comfort. I can fully recommend this place we stayed in in Cordoba, Spain, in case you ever go there:
http://funnyphuppo.wordpress.com/2012/01/06/hospederia-luis-de-gongora/
We also found good cottages for rent in Sri Lanka. I will be putting up a post about them soon. Occasionally, however, I do like to splurge on a nice luxurious hotel.
But the way I have really financed my bug for travelling is to go study or work in a different continent and then explore the neighbouring countries. Born in Pakistan, I have now lived in North America and Europe, and feel truly like I know these 3 continents (including Asia) and their people really well.
Yes I tend to stay in B&B or apartment rentals now – thanks for the Cordoba tip, I’ve not travelled much around Spain yet despite it being so near to the UK. Studying and working abroad is such a good way to see the world – it sound like you’re doing well so far!
Great site. It seems like we all have been doing the same things (travelling/writing combination). I am not yet on my settling down phase but I can feel it approaching and its quite exciting. I will be back to check how are you doing. Come for a visit anytime! S.
Thanks, it can be a challenge mixing together travel with the normal life things but it’s so worth it! You have some great photos on your site – good luck with the blogging and I’ll be sure to check how you’re getting on!
I think your blog is great and I’ve nominated you for the Versatile Blogger Award. 🙂 http://trialsinfood.wordpress.com/2012/05/12/101st-post-and-a-big-thank-you/
Thanks so much for the nomination – and congrats on all the nominations for your blog too!
Just found your blog & really enjoying it!
Lovely site!! Just opened my blog, and finding a lot of inspiration on here! Looking forward to going through all your posts this evening with a nice glass of vino!! : )
Hi Amber, thanks for stopping by – and good luck with your new blogging adventures!
great blog. i like it.
Thanks for visiting!
Hi Lucy! Very nice to find these amazing photos…I have been actually imagining that kind of a travel and work lifestyle for decades now! 🙂 Glad to hear that you are having such a grand time doing what you want. Ciao!
Thanks, and welcome to the site!
I admire your courage to give up your job for your passion and the way you have motivated and inspired to live on……thats a very good way of living life. I like your way of life…wish i could be a little of you. i like your blog and hope to learn something….that i am wishing to………..Good luck dear!
Thanks, it was a bit scary to start with to change what you are used to but it’s been worth it so far. Good luck with finding your passion and making it part of your life too!
Hi Lucy, I have nominated your blog for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award. I hope you accept this nomination.
regards Luciana
Hi Luciana – thanks so much for the nomination, and congratulations on yours too!
Great blog! I really love the pictures!
Lucy,
Thanks so much for visiting my site periodically. I too enjoying reading your blog. Really appreciate the support and interest. Have a great weekend. Best, David
Thanks David, and you’re very welcome. I look forward to reading about your travels around Japan – I’ve only visited Tokyo on a stopover for a couple of nights and would love to see more as it looks like such a fascinating country. Have a great trip!
Thanks so much. More to come on Japan. 🙂 David
So glad I found your blog! I am in my 20s and doing the whole backpacking on a major budget thing, so it’s fun to hear about how your travels have changed over the years. I hope to always travel, but to also have a business and life and well, certain comforts that you seem to have achieved. Looking forward to reading your posts!
Hi, and thanks for visiting! I’ve just been catching up on your travels on your site and looks like you are doing a lot of similar places to my big RTW trip (including Ko Samet, which I loved so much I went back twice). Scary to think my trip was 9 years ago now. My travel style has changed a bit since (few less overnight buses and dorm rooms!) but I still love it just as much and try to do as much as I can.
I am so glad I found your blog! I love to travel, and to do stuff tourist normaly dont! and I want to see as much of the world as possible! And while i sitt here in Norway, i can read about your experiences and just wait untill my travels go on for more adventures! You have a new follower!
Thanks, and welcome to the site! I love to try and find interesting and different things to do too, especially in well-known places I’ve visited a lot. I’ve not managed to make it to Norway yet though but hope to soon. Happy travelling!
Great blog with very interesting pictures! You’ve got another follower!
Hi, thanks for visiting and glad you enjoy the site!
Hi Lucy, It sounds as though we have a lot in common, at least on the face of things, i.e. backpacking history, enduring love of travel but a need to accommodate ‘normal’ life, too. I’ll be following with interest from now on.
Hi Julie, thanks for visiting. It does get a bit tougher when there’s other things competing with your love of travel for your time (and money!) but I try and do as much as I can. Look forward to checking out your site too and learning a bit more about Portugal, I should be making my first trip out there next year – can’t believe it’s taken me so long!
There’s only so much time and money to go around so it’s not surprising that it takes a while to get around to visiting places, even if they’ve been on your wishlist for ages. My list gets longer instead of shorter!
Let me know if you have any questions about your trip to Portugal.
Thanks, and will do. I’m going away for a weekend in February with a friend to either Porto or Lisbon so will let you know when we are decided!
Hello again, I hope you don’t mind – there’s no obligation, of course – but I’ve tagged you in a photography challenge: http://juliedawnfox.com/2012/10/23/cbbh-photo-challenge-windows-of-portugal/. If you find time, I’ll look forward to your entry.
Thanks for the nomination, and I love the windows theme. I will have a dig through my photo archives and see what I can come up with!
Awards are rolling again, Lucy. Blame Alyson!

Looking forward to reading more.

Thanks for visiting and good luck with your travels! I’d be really interested to do a long-term trip again and see how my approach would be different 10 years on. I suspect there’d be a few more comforts and a slower pace of travel these days!

Thanks – and good luck for your future travel and blogging journey!
The ‘dodgy’ loose/luce pun is great, not dodgy at all. I love it haha.
Thanks, hoped it might stick in people’s heads, the slightly dodgy pun is a great British tradition!
Hi Lucy you are an inspiration to me I also love blogging and travel I freelance for an entertainment magazine but would love to focus on travel. I am very new to blogging and would love some advise. please check out my blog peepsouth.wordpress.com based on life in South Africa

I will be graduating college in two years, and am considering a traveling lifestyle for my first couple years in the “real world”. Your blog is offers wonderful inspiration, and I can’t wait to read more!
http://darlingitsamadworld.wordpress.com
Sounds like a great idea! I worked for a couple of years after graduating to save up some money then did a big RTW trip before I got too settled – it was an amazing experience and definitely recommended.
This is the first blog on which I read “about” section. Your design made it so easy to the eye that I had no trouble starting from there. Love your blog!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks – and interesting post, I didn’t know anything about wine from Azerbaijan!
Hey there, I came across this on my ‘recommended blogs’ page and am looking forward to reading some of your work. I noticed you’ve Iceland listed in your destinations but haven’t written about it. I recently got back from a two-week trip there and have written a couple of articles about it so far on my new blog. Having both lived in London it would be interesting to see if you agreed with my views on Reykjavik’s Culture Night. I’ve also written a piece on the Rockies for when you’re planning your Canada trip, hopefully you’ll find it quite useful : ) http://www.soleseeking.wordpress.com
Thanks, I will definitely check out your Iceland posts. I travelled there in my pre-digital camera days so don’t have very good photos, but will get the scanner out and write about it sometime (or maybe it’s time for another trip out there!).
What a wonderful blog. I have been inspired by so many of the same places. Your photographs are superb. Look forward to following you on your travels. We recently returned from Machu Picchu after the trip of a lifetime. If you’re interested you can see my blog at: seal2013.wordpress.com. Best wishes…Andrew
Thanks for visiting and for your lovely comments! Machu Picchu sounds amazing, I’ll definitely check your site out as I’ve always wanted to make the trip out there.
Hey! Got to know you through Ben’s blog (Flights Camera Satisfaction). You have an amazing blog here! And I love the header, by the way! Congratulations 😀
Thanks for visiting. I’ve just been checking out your site and you have some amazing photographs!
Thank you so much! You have really nice stuff here as well. I’ll be following 🙂
Hi! I’m a new travel blogger to the community, and I stumbled across your blog and love it! I too want to travel for a living but am not yet sure how to do it; I’m hoping to get into international development post-graduation, but anything is possible, right? I’ll be in Europe this upcoming year studying at the Lancaster University Management School in the UK and am SO excited for the adventures that await. Just wanted to say hello and that I’m looking forward to following you on yours!
Cheers,
Olivia
Hi Olivia, thanks so much for visiting and for your comments. International development sounds like a really fascinating thing to study – I did geography at university and have studied a bit of anthropology and loved it. One of my best friends studied at Lancaster too and I have heard such good things about it – best of luck with your study and blogging exploits!
hi lucy! i would love the opportunity to contact you and ask some questions. we have a lot in common. i too am writing a blog about traveling and living overseas : ) but unfortunately, i can’t find a place where you have an email listed on your wonderful blog. i only see places to leave comments. hope to hear from you soon to chat! thanks, Ariel

Thanks for introducing me to Twitter Lucy! I think your travel blog is great!
Thanks Sheila – and welcome to Twitter!
HI Lucy, I just found your post on wordpress and decided to take a look at your very interesting site. You DO do nice work! I also share your travel obsession; My brand new wordpress website and blog is http://www.trustingtraveler.com and I am The Trusting Traveler! The way I have managed to travel internationally with my family of four (and other family members who tag along) is through international home exchange. It is phenomenal. My site is dedicated to helping families live a life rich in culture and travel. I think you and all your readers could benefit from what I have to share. I hope you will check me out.
Thanks so much! I will definitely check out your site as home exchange is something I’ve been thinking about doing after finally buying my own house last year. Finding ways to travel in style on a budget is a big passion of mine and this sounds like it might be a good way of doing it.
Love your style. travel broadens the mind, empties the wallet and even most of the bad bits turn out to be good bits in the end. May your journey never end.
Regards
Sir
Very true – those travel disasters are usually my best stories! Thanks for visiting.

Hi Tim, yes my own room is definitely a requirement these days, spent too many nights listening to a random stranger snoring! Thanks for following and will check out your site too.
Snoring, drunk, chatty, sloppy. They were kind of fun at the time but not so much any more. 🙂
Love your blog. I’m also a full-time office worker and I try to travel as much as possible but it can be challenging at times.
http://www.awayfromtheoffice.com

Hi Lucy! Love your blog and the travel element!!! So much so that I just wanted to let you know that I have nominated you for the Liebster Award! Head over to my post here at http://lulubellaloveslife.wordpress.com/2014/05/13/liebster-blog-award-nomination/ also just keep on being inspirational with the travelling! Really think everyone should experience some form of movement from their home. Congratulations!
Thanks so much for the nomination, much appreciated – and happy travels to you!
Lucy, excellent job! You did a very thorough job of talking about road trips on a budget and you provide very wise advice on making one’s trip “…a journey rather than a destination…” (stay away from the 500 mile driving days…) I’ve learned some tips from you including the idea of including a sponge in the cooler. In our cooler we also like to have healthy, portable alternatives to eating out including hard boiled eggs, fruit, and hummus.
Thanks Diane, great to hear that you have found some of the tips useful, and good ideas for packable snacks, they are some great healthy options to have!
Hi Lucy, I love reading your blog and have nominated you for the Liebster Award! This is an award that’s passed around the blogging community to share great blogs with fellow bloggers and create awareness of new blogs out there! Check out my page here for more info!
http://rachellishman.wordpress.com/2014/06/01/the-liebster-award/
Thanks so much for the nomination Rachel – much appreciated!
You’re very welcome Lucy! Happy travels 🙂
Haha Love the name!! Can’t wait to check out your posts. Looks like my kinda ‘space’ 🙂

Thanks so much for the nomination!
Hey Lucy ! Its wonderful Blog. Your journey is totally awesome. Keep Travelling …:)
Thanks so much – great to hear you’re enjoying it! Happy travels.
Lucy …You are more of an inspiration than a nomination 🙂
Thanks so much Sonia, that’s lovely to hear!
Great blog! I’m kind of on the same journey as you at the moment … I have a house, family, pets and a full-time job and am juggling my travel in between! Good luck with your travels and I look forward to reading your blogs.
Wendy 🙂
Thanks Wendy, it’s a bit of a balancing act combining them all isn’t it! Worth it for the fantastic memories though. I was just having a look at your post about the Amalfi Coast – I’m heading out there in October and so excited, it looks fantastic!
Oh yes the Amalfi Coast is amazing! You will love it … actually it’s hard not to!
Absolutly love what you have done with the blog, major inspiration, would love pointers on blogging if you have the time!! Many thanks!! Happy travels
Thanks so much – and best of luck with your blog too! My top tips would be to find what you enjoy writing about and keep at it, it can take a long time to grow an audience and it’s easy to get a bit dispirited but they’re out there. Use lots of photos and take time to edit and proofread your work to make it look as professional as you can. Get involved in social media – there are some good blogging Facebook groups where you can get lots of advice, and Twitter chats where you can get your name out to other bloggers. Travel blogger events (Traverse, Travel Massive, TBEX) are great for advice and inspiration too. If you’ve got any questions just drop me an email – happy blogging!
Thanks 🙂 never really done this before so just seeing how i get on. The other lad on the blog knows alot more about it. Mainly just doing is as like a public diary of our travels. Thanks again!
Hi Lucy, just letting you know I nominated you for the Lovely Blog Award
https://heelsandhindsight.wordpress.com/2014/09/03/one-lovely-blog-award/
Thanks so much for the nomination, much appreciated!
No problem, I enjoy reading your blog and I like this concept of showing support with an award 🙂
Great blog 🙂 We share the same name! Nice to find a fellow Lucy with a penchant for travelling! Looking forward to reading more! 🙂
Thanks so much – always good to meet another Lucy! Happy travels.
