Reviewed: Celebrity Equinox cruise ship

You might spot that this is a bit different from my usual accommodation reviews, being as that it’s a cruise ship rather than a hotel. But when you think about it, what is a ship really other than a massive floating hotel? Albeit more like a mega-resort with 1400 rooms, 10 restaurants, five bars and its own theatre. Read more

My third year On the Luce

It’s that time of year again – when I dig out the Champagne glasses and crack open the bubbly (any excuse) to celebrate both me and this blog reaching another birthday. The last three years On the Luce have seen 244 blog posts, 1451 photos, 19 countries covered and 7636 comments – phew! Read more

Reviewed: Riad Capaldi, Marrakech medina

As I mentioned before, I do love a good Moroccan riad, so after experiencing a modern version in Essaouira, it was time to get traditional in Marrakech. The only problem was picking which one – the city’s medina has something like 1000 different riads scattered across it. Read more

Reviewed: Riad Dar Maya, Essaouira

A riad is the classic place to stay if you’re visiting Morocco. In these traditional buildings the rooms face inwards onto a central courtyard with a roof terrace up above. But although the structure might be fairly standard, they come in all shapes and sizes, from simple to ultra-luxe. Read more

Staying on the Las Vegas Strip – whatever your budget

The Strip is the heart of Las Vegas, a four-mile-long, multi-lane highway lined by one enormous billion-dollar casino resort after another. It’s the epicentre of the city, whether you’re looking to gamble, party or just soak up the Las Vegas craziness. Read more

In pictures: The best of the rest of 2013

As I tidy up my desk and my desktop for the end of the year, I always get distracted by the files of photos and can’t help dipping in and reliving some of my trips from the last year. Being something of a photo-taking obsessive, there’s always a lot of them – way more than I can ever use on the blog. Read more

On the Luce in 2013

2013 has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me. There have been some big travel highs – like road-tripping around the southwest USA’s National Parks, a girly weekend of port tasting and gossip in Porto, family trips to the Algarve with my family and Montenegro with my husband’s, and then finally seeing Paris looking beautiful at Christmas. Reviewed: Old Pear Tree Barn, North Cornwall

Rather than jetting off somewhere exotic post-wedding, we decided a week of rest and recovery nearer to home would be a good plan (plus I’m still struggling with the big honeymoon question). Somewhere peaceful where we could laze around among beautiful countryside would be perfect – like Cornwall. Read more

Reviewed: A night behind bars at the Malmaison Oxford

Unless I decide to take up a life of crime, a stay at the Malmaison in Oxford is hopefully the only way I’ll ever spend a night behind bars. And in this unique hotel you get a lot more luxury now than the last people who got locked up here. Read more

My second year On the Luce

The last week has seen two birthdays as this blog reached its second anniversary and I well and truly entered my mid 30s! It’s been a great year ‘On the Luce’ and I want to thank all the new readers of the site that have come on board this year, as well as saying a special thank you to those that have stuck with me from the beginning. In pictures: The best of the rest of 2012

Just like last year, I’ve taken hundred of photos over the year – way more than I could ever manage to use on this site. So to end the year, I’ve chosen a selection of my favourite photos from the past year that I never quite managed to fit into a blog post. Read more

On the Luce in 2012

After an epic year of travelling in 2011, with over a third of the year spent on the road, 2012 had a very tough act to follow. But although it might have lacked in quantity by comparison, it made up for in quality, with two of my travel wish-list trips ticked off and two new countries visited. Read more

Happy birthday(s)

This week is one for birthdays – I turned 34 last weekend, and On the Luce travel blog reaches its first anniversary tomorrow (and it’s also my mum’s birthday today so happy birthday mum!). Read more

If you’re done with hostels but want something more interesting and less pricey than a big chain hotel, there are some places that you can struggle to find somewhere good to stay, but Bali wasn’t one of them. Read more

Reviewed: Bali Hotel Pearl, Legian

This is the first of a new Reviewed series, where I share some of the best and most interesting accommodation I’ve found in on my travels. You won’t find any five-star chain hotels here, but instead I look for hidden gems which are good value, individual and give a touch of luxury on a budget. Read more
