In pictures: Arches National Park

Delicate Arch, Arches National Park, Utah, USA

Arches National Park in Utah is one of those places where the name tells you exactly what you’ll see. This park contains over 2000 different arches carved out of its golden sandstone over hundreds of thousands of years. It has the greatest density of rock arches anywhere in the world. Some soar high above you – the biggest is Landscape Arch at 306 feet wide – and some are so small you could step right over them. The most famous is Delicate Arch (pictured above), which features on Utah’s license plates. There aren’t just arches here though, there are also caves and double arches, fins like those at Park Avenue and single stacks and towers like Balanced Rock, all formed by the same erosion process. The landscape here is  constantly but slowly changing – today’s cave is tomorrow’s arch, today’s arch is tomorrow’s stack.

Arches National Park is located in southeast Utah, five miles north of Moab. Entry costs $10 per car (or $5 per person on foot/bike) and is valid for a week, or it’s free with a National Parks Pass. It’s best to have a car to get around the park. There’s a 40-mile scenic drive around the park with short walks to a lot of the main arches and some longer hikes, like the one out to Delicate Arch. In summer it gets incredibly hot and dry so it’s a good idea to go early or late in the day and always take lots of water.
