In pictures: An island of luxury at Sveti Stefan

Island of Sveti Stefan on the Montenegro coast

Just off the Montenegrin coast, Sveti Stefan is a perfect teardrop-shaped island with terracotta-tiled buildings and evergreen trees set in a turquoise bay. It dates back to the 15th century and started off as a fortified fishing village. But the fishermen were replaced by royalty and celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton when it was turned into a luxury hotel in the 1950s. It was abandoned in the 1980s after the Balkan conflict but was refurbished and reopened a few years ago as part of the luxury Aman resorts hotel group. It’s so exclusive that you can’t get past the doormen and across the walkway onto the island unless you splash out at least €900 a night for a room. But sun loungers on their private beach at €50 or lunch at the restaurant on the mainland are a comparative bargain, and the views come for free.

How much does it cost to rent a house?

    • You can get one of the cottage for about €1100 but their most expensive suite – the ‘Sveti Stefan’ – will set you back €3500 a night in summer!

  3. We had a very good and reasonably priced meal at the resort’s mainland restaurant Olive when we were there. It’s a bit of a tease being able to look but not visit the island! I feel it’s all a bit walled-in but I’m sure it’s spectacular inside….

    • As long as you are on the mainland the prices are ok but you have to seriously pay for the privilege to cross that bridge! I think there are plenty of things I would rather spend €900 on (like a whole extra holiday!) but I wouldn’t say not if they wanted to offer me a free trip!

    • Thanks, shame I couldn’t get any closer but I’ll need to befriend a millionaire first!
